Kolkata is the capital city of West Bengal and was the former capital of the British India. Today Kolkata forms the commercial and industrial hub of eastern India. Kolkata being a major port ,is situated on the right bank of the river Hooghly which is about 150 kms upstream from the Bay of Bengal. The region is part of the world's largest deltaic zone at the mouths of the river Ganges. The “Sunderbans” or the mangrove forests are situated towards the south of the city.
Kolkata is a city that has completed three hundred years of its establishment. It has adopted to the modern trends and techniques of the world but has not lost the leisurely life style which it has accumulated since ages. Kolkata has the country's first Metro railway and also retains some of its building which are more than hundred years old.
